Do you wear long pants, even in the sweltering summer? Is it because you’re embarrassed by the spider veins on your legs? You know, the good news is you don’t have to live with them. They can be effectively and easily treated with a procedure called sclerotherapy.
During this treatment, a special solution is injected into the spider veins, causing them to permanently collapse and disappear from view. Once treated, a spider vein can never recur. It’s possible for new ones to form, but those can be treated too! Tried and tested, sclerotherapy in some form has been used since the 1930’s.
Who’s at Risk of Getting Veins?
When it comes to spider veins, women are at a disadvantage. Women are far more prone to them than men are. Estrogen plays a strong role in this. The strain of pregnancy is another factor. Over half of all women have some degree of spider vein formation. These veins also appear to have a genetic component. Occupations that require long periods of standing may contribute to their formation and aggravation as well.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a treatment that is primarily used to treat damaged deeper veins as well as spider veins that appear on the surface of the skin. Sclerotherapy works by injecting a sclerosing agent into the veins that are being targeted for treatment. The agent that is injected virtually kills off the vein, which forces the blood to reroute through different veins. The damaged vessel is eventually just absorbed back into the body. As a result, it fades from view.
Why is Sclerotherapy the Ideal Treatment?
Sclerotherapy is an ideal treatment for many reasons including its quick and simple procedure. People lead busy lives, so any procedure that can be done with little to no recovery time is welcome.
