Everybody sweats. It’s the way the human body was designed to regulate its temperature. However, there are very few times when sweating could be considered cool or desirable. For most people sweating is just gross. Excessive sweating is even worse.
Some people suffer from axillary hyperhidrosis, also referred to as excessive underarm sweating. This has been a problem that the cosmetic industry, as well as different parts of the medical industry, have worked hard to find a solution for. In January 2011, the FDA approved miraDry as a way to treat excessive underarm sweating. Currently, miraDry treatments are available in the United States, throughout Europe, in Canada, and in parts of Asia. Interestingly, in 2015 the same device was approved by the FDA as a way to permanently remove underarm hair.
As the FDA evaluated the effectiveness and safety of miraDry, they found that it was a safe and effective way to not only attack the excessive sweating that people with axillary hyperhidrosis suffer, but it can also can remove foul-smelling underarm sweat.
In one study, a group of patients were treated with miraDry. They went through a seven-month period of evaluation. At the end the study showed that more than 83 percent of the treated underarms showed a marked improvement when it came to hyperhidrosis, and more than 93 percent of patients showed a reduction in the production of sweat that created a foul odor.
A similar study that was done at the University of British Columbia showed that miraDry was able to reduce excessive underarm sweat in upwards of 90 percent of patients.
While miraDry has been beneficial to the millions of individuals around the world who suffer with excessive underarm sweat, it is not designed to be used to treat excessive sweating in other parts of the body, like the hands or feet. This is because the microwaves produced by the device have been specifically designed to target the sweat glands in a person’s armpits.
The miraDry procedure is non-invasive. A handheld device is used to direct pinpoint, controlled bursts of electromagnetic energy, eliminating overactive sweat glands.
The entire procedure may be performed under the care of a medical specialist in a physician’s office. Treatment time may vary.
Patients may experience some swelling, redness, and tenderness in their armpits for a few days after the procedure.
miraDry is a safe procedure that allows a person battling the embarrassment that excessive underarm sweating produces to have peace of mind. Contact Mariposa Aesthetics & Laser Center today to schedule your appointment.
