Chemical Peel Basics

As noted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a chemical peels uses a chemical solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers. While the peels are most commonly used on the patient’s face, they can also be appropriated for the purpose of improving the skin of an individual’s hands and neck.

As many people know, factors such as acne, the aging process, and sun exposure can result in skin that appears spotted, wrinkled, scarred or uneven. Chemical peels are a great way to resolve these skin issues. In fact, chemical peels are known to help improve acne scars, liver spots, fine lines, freckles, rough skin, irregular skin pigmentation, sun-damaged skin, and scaly patches.

It’s also important to note that there are several things a chemical peel will not do. Some of those things include treating deep facial lines, removing broken capillaries, removing deep sores, changing pore size, and tightening sagging or loose skin.

Choosing the Right Chemical Peel

It’s important to note that there are a wide range of chemical peel options out there. For example, you can opt for a light, medium, or deep chemical peel depending on your skin and the results you’re trying to achieve.

Light Chemical Peel

Light chemical peels involve removing the epidermis (outer layer of your skin) with a light exfoliation. The end result is a healthy, youthful goal. The light chemical peel is typically appropriate and advantageous for individuals attempting to rid themselves of uneven pigmentation, acne, fine wrinkling, or dryness.

Medium Chemical Peel

With the medium chemical peel, a health care official will utilize trichloroacetic acid (sometimes in conjunction with glycolic acid) to remove skin cells from the epidermis and top components of the dermis. Medium chemical peels are effective in treating uneven skin color, deeper wrinkles, and acne scars.

Deep Chemical Peel

Deep chemical peels involve using a strong chemical referred to as phenol to get into the lower dermal layer of an individual’s skin. With this kind of peel, patients will often need a sedative and local anesthetic. Additionally, a deep chemical peels will typically require a pretreatment that takes up to eight weeks. The pretreatment is used to prepare the patient’s skin for the deep peel as well as to accelerate the process of healing. The deep chemical peel is most appropriate for individuals with sun-damaged skin, pre-cancerous growths, blotchy skin, and deep facial wrinkles.

Summing It All Up

Chemical peels can play a profound role in improving the appearance of your skin. To ensure that you can select the chemical peel that is most appropriate and advantageous for you, be sure that you consult with a trained medical official.
