Nearly everyone eventually notices how time, age, and the environment starts to affect our skin. Things like the sun, pollution, and other environmental elements can have an adverse effect on our skin’s surface, especially when it comes to the skin on our faces. Common problems like dry, rough texture; age spots and other hyperpigmentation; fine lines and wrinkles; and scars from acne and other blemishes cause damage and make our faces look tired, rough, uneven, and older than it should.
Of course, there are always creams, lotions, and other forms of skin care, but they can only do so much. So what if you want more? Is there anything that can be done without having to jump straight to invasive, uncomfortable procedures? Actually, there is, and here at Mariposa MedSpa, we can help combat many of these common issues, thanks to Microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion is a safe, simple, non-invasive, non-surgical technique that can help lessen and even correct many of these issues. It is also non-chemical, so it is different from skin or facial peels. Microdermabrasion is an abrasive technique, but only minimally so. Basically, Microdermabrasion works to “sand” the outer layer of your skin so that fresher, newer skin beneath comes to the surface, resulting in a smoother and more pleasing look overall.
The main issues that benefit from Microdermabrasion include improving age spots and hyperpigmentation, deep cleansing to remove blackheads and other blemishes, reducing the appearance of stretch marks (such as those that result from significant weight loss), reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles, helping to reduce the appearance of large pores, and even treating both acne and acne scars.
In some cases, Microdermabrasion can help people who suffer from facial redness caused by rosacea. Microdermabrasion also helps stimulate and thicken skin’s natural collagen so you are left with younger-looking skin that appears tighter and more firm — two things that we lose as we age.
There are two methods of doing Microdermabrasion. The most common way is a bit like a gentle sander for your face. Your medical spa professional here at Mariposa uses a special tool that sprays fine microcrystals onto your skin. The crystals are what smooth the outer layers of skin, removing dead and superficial skin cells and other pollutants that you don’t want trapped in your skin. This helps encourage the growth of new skin cells and the production of higher levels of collagen and elastin — a protein in our skin that helps maintain tightness and firmness. While those microcrystals work to loosen all the dead skin cells and pollutants, a vacuum device gently sucks it all away.
The second type of Microdermabrasion involves the use of a diamond-tipped wand. Your spa professional uses this wand on the skin of your face to do much the same thing that the microcrystals do, but this technique can offer more precision in those areas that may require extra, more directed attention. As with the microcrystal form of Microdermabrasion, this technique also uses a vacuum device to get rid of all the superficial cells and pollutants while the wand does its work.
Microdermabrasion is gentler than traditional dermabrasion, which is used to help people who have deep facial lines, significant sun damage, and certain kinds of facial scarring. Your Microdermabrasion sessions are simple and done right here at our state-of-the-art medical spa, and sessions take only half an hour, on average. There is virtually no pain or discomfort, though some people feel a mild scratching sensation. You will also experience a mild vibrating feeling and some slight suction as the vacuum is used. And there is no downtime to worry about, nor any complicated post-procedure instructions. At most, your spa professional may recommend the use of special skin care products for maintenance.
Microdermabrasion works best for people who have troublesome, but still mostly minor skin concerns, such as the ones noted above. If you have more serious skin issues, such as skin sagging, deep lines or wrinkles, or severe acne or acne scarring, talk to us about other procedures that we offer that might give you better results.
