Sweating is important in regulating the body’s temperature. Sweat glands usually produce just enough sweat to cool us down without producing too much. However, some people find themselves embarrassed, ashamed and even isolated because of the excessive sweat that is produced by their underarm sweat glands. The miraDry procedure is helping countless people overcome this social stigma.
How Does miraDry Work?
The miraDry procedure for eliminating underarm sweat is quite simple. A specialized device is used to deliver electromagnetic heat directly into the underarm area. Once this energy is absorbed by the sweat glands, they heat up very quickly. When they reach a high enough temperature, they are rendered useless and can no longer produce sweat permanently.
This non-invasive procedure is perfectly safe and has been cleared by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The reason miraDry works so well is that it’s the only treatment that eliminates so many sweat glands at once. Since sweat glands do not regenerate, the results are very long-lasting.
Why miraDry is the Best Option
There are other ways of treating the condition called Axillary Hyperhidrosis. This is when the sweat glands are overactive or when they can’t seem to stop producing sweat. Instead of resting after enough sweat has been produced to cool the body, they continue indefinitely.
While prescription-strength underarm anti-antiperspirants, injections of BOTOX®, and other methods have failed, cost-effective solutions like the miraDry procedure have succeeded.
The miraDry Procedure
The miraDry procedure can take about one hour to complete. The first step is to lay our patients down on their backs with their arms above their heads to make the underarms clearly visible and accessible.
The underarm area is then clearly marked by our physicians, and a local anesthetic is administered by injection to numb the area.
Our miraDry device is then placed on the marked area and activated. The device sucks the skin closer to the electromagnet applicator for greater efficiency. Next, the device begins to deliver the electromagnetic energy to the sweat glands until they are eliminated.
After the Procedure
Directly after the procedure, ice packs are placed on the underarms to reduce any discomfort that might result. Although patients can go back to their regular activities afterward, it’s advised that vigorous activities like exercise be avoided for the first few days.
It might be necessary to undergo more than one miraDry procedure for the best results.
