Intense Pulsed Light treatment, also known as IPL therapy and photorejuvenation, is a non-invasive treatment used to treat a variety of skin conditions, particularly those that cause discoloration or fine lines. It can be used on the face, neck, chest and hands.
How Does IPL Therapy Work?
As with a laser, light wavelengths are aimed at specific cells or types of cells. The pigment in the cells absorbs the light energy, which is then converted to heat energy that affects the cells. Unlike a laser, which uses only one light wavelength, IPL therapy uses several. Most IPL systems have filters that regulate the amount of light generated to protect neighboring tissues and ensure that only the targeted cells are affected.
IPL therapy is often described as a non-ablative resurfacing technique. “Ablative” means “wounding”, and describes a light or laser that creates a wound by removing the top layers of the skin. A non-ablative light or laser affects only cells in the dermis, while leaving the epidermis, or topmost layer of skin, unharmed. IPL therapy, therefore, requires little recovery time; the patient can even go back to work immediately after treatment.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
Our trained specialist first cleans the treatment area and applies a cool gel. The patient is given protective eyewear. The specialist then places the IPL device against the patient’s skin, and it emits a series of light pulses. The treatment generally takes 20 to 30 minutes. Treatment sessions are usually given about once a month. The results last several months. After completing the original course of treatments, many people get maintenance treatments once or twice a year.
Are There Any Skincare Requirements?
The patient has to avoid the sun for several weeks before IPL therapy. The skin will be delicate immediately after the treatment, so the patient should use soap and moisturizers designed for sensitive skin for about a week after the treatment. The patient should also use sunscreen and limit their exposure to the sun to ensure optimal results.
